The governor of Almaty met with the head of the International Sports Committee of the Deaf
28 december 2017

The governor of Almaty Bauyrzhan Baibek met with the president of the International Committee of Sports of the Deaf Valery Rukhledev. The parties discussed the possibility of hosting the XIX Deaflympics Winter Games in 2019.

According to Valery Rukhledev, who arrived with the delegation from Lausanne, the city has all the necessary infrastructure for holding various competitions in winter sports and holding the Deaflympics will certainly promote the involvement of citizens with disabilities in mass sports.

"We got acquainted with the magnificent sports infrastructure built in Almaty. We were impressed not only by the architecture of the buildings and their equipment according to the most modern standards, but also by the active sports life, which filled these facilities. We could watch republican competitions in curling and skiing, children's training of figure skaters and hockey players, as well as mass skating and skiing. All this, as well as the 28th World Winter Universiade, held in February this year at the highest level, show that Almaty today is rightly considered to be one of the world winter sports centers," he said.

According to him, the Surdlimpiads allow the cities hosting the Games to improve the public urban environment. For people with disabilities, special ramps, elevators, sidewalks, traffic lights, special marking, visual pointers and much more are appearing or being modernized.

"For 94 years of existence of the International Committee of Sports of the Deaf, the Asian continent has never hosted the Deaflympic Winter Games. Our long experience shows that immediately after the Surdlimpiad, people with disabilities are awakened by an increased interest in active physical education and sports. Games make them more active, integrated into social life. The application was not submitted from Almaty, but we consider the city as a possible capital," he added.

It should be noted that today there are 44.1 thousand disabled people in the city, of them about 5 thousand by hearing. In 2017, 4.1 billions tenge was allocated for social support of disabled people,

Deaflympics - sports competitions for people with hearing impairment, the first World Games of the Deaf were held in 1924 in Paris.
